PFAS disclosure requirements for cookware manufacturers

On Behalf of | Jan 26, 2024 | Environmental Law

California is working hard to protect its people’s health by making stricter rules about harmful chemicals. This includes putting stronger regulations on substances like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Despite being toxic and often labeled as ‘forever chemicals,’ PFAS are still found in many cookware products.

So, protecting the public doesn’t fall solely on the state. It’s also on companies to produce items that help reduce people’s exposure to these substances.

Regulations on cookware manufacturers

Manufacturers frequently use PFAS to produce water-resistant clothing and non-stick cookware. However, PFAS is a toxin that can unintentionally cause serious health issues. So, anyone exposed to these substances may face health risks such as cancer and immune system dysfunction. In response to these risks, California has taken decisive action. The state has implemented stricter regulations to limit people’s exposure to PFAS. Since 2023, California has been proactive in enforcing protective measures. One significant measure includes banning the sale of food packaging containing the chemical. This step encourages manufacturers to switch to safer alternatives.

The state has not only focused on packaging but also imposed strict regulations on cookware manufacturers. For companies that produce cookware products, the state requires them to:

  • List any intentionally added chemicals on a dedicated website for each product.
  • Label their products with a list of any intentionally added chemicals.
  • Provide English and Spanish explanations on how consumers can get more information about any chemicals added to their products.

To reduce harm to public health, California will not permit the sale of any cookware that fails to follow these new rules.

Toward a healthier future

Adhering to regulations contributes to the company’s betterment and promotes the well-being of its consumers and the environment. So, it’s in the best interest of these manufacturers to ensure they’re doing everything the law requires. For those who need guidance with compliance, seeking the help of a legal professional to assist with the process could be beneficial.
